Winners of the 21st Hong Kong Film Awards

Shaolin Soccer came away as the night's biggest winners with seven awards, just one short of the record eight wins (by Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Comrades...almost a love story). Surprisingly, Stephen Chow won two director awards as well as Best Actor, showing his critics that he has certainly matured over the years. It is good to see if Chow could beat this night in the future with more awards.

The other biggest upset of the night is Sylvia Chang winning the Best Actress award. The media were certain that Sammi Cheng (three nominations for Best Actress) would win, but obviously the split votes counted against her, although she did win an award for Best Song.

The other big winner is newcomer Karena Lam, who won the Best Supporting Actress award as well as the Best Newcomer gong for the same movie. Let's just hope that her career doesn't spiral downwards after her wins.

All in all, despite Shaolin Soccer winning seven gongs, the rest were evenly split among the other contenders. Roll on 2003.
