Summer
Holiday is a beautifully shot movie, so much so, that it is like
watching a holiday promotional video. The skies are always blue;
the weather is always perfect; the sea is clear and inviting; the
beach is warm and clean. In a word: Perfect. But that description
doesn't apply to the film. Perfect it isn't. However, that doesn't
mean the film is bad in anyway, just that there isn't anything special
there to make you want to stay longer. You will certainly enjoy
the scenery, but you can forget about the story.
Summer
(Sammi Cheng) is a stressed-out office lady who works in Hong Kong.
After being dumped by her boyfriend, she decides to take a trip
to Malaysia to check out a beach in which she owns half of. Whilst
there, she encounters a beachbum, Momocha (Ren), whom she has an
instant dislike to. However, Momocha falls in love with her, and
follows her around everywhere.
Summer
also finds out that the other half of the beach is owned by Momocha,
given to him by her cousin. Some corporate representative approaches
Summer and wants to buy the whole beach off her so that they can
turn it into a holiday resort. Eyes filled with money, she persuades
Momocha to sell the beach, but he refuses. And the rest of the story
is that she in the end falls for the good-hearted nature of Momocha,
and decide to keep the beach for themselves.
It
isn't a bad film by any means. It is quite enlightenling, funny
in some places, and fans of Sammi Cheng and Richie Ren won't be
disappointed. However, there isn't anything original or creative
in this romantic comedy - certainly, this cannot even match the
superb Needing You - so therefore, I suggest you save your money,
and buy that instead.
